Arizona State University’s Center for Advanced Studies in Global Education at Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College is pleased to be hosting our upcoming symposium Innovations in Global Learning Metrics: A focused debate among users, producers, and researchers. This invitation-only event is funded by the Spencer Foundation and Open Society Foundations and will take place at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona on November 15-16, 2018.

The broad goal of bringing together a small group of stakeholders, test developers, researchers, political and social leaders is to advance a policy dialogue about a more effective and meaningful use of GLMs for education policy-making at both national and international levels. During the symposium, we will discuss strategies for linking education GLMs to other relevant social global metrics (health, economic, demographic) in the context of SDG4. We will also explore display technologies for data visualization, modeling, and simulation to assist in the processes of evidence-informed decision making related to GLMs.

Education, Development and Sustainability: A Critical Dialogue on the Role of Global Learning Metrics

Our speakers will engage in a discussion about current perspectives on education challenges, development models, and their relationships with environmental issues.

David Berliner, Regents’ Professor Emeritus and research professor at ASU’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College

Mary Metcalfe, director of education change, Programme to Improve Learning Outcomes; and University of Johannesburg, South Africa

Tinde Kovács Cerovic, former assistant minister of Education, Serbia; and Open Society Foundations Education Support advisory board

This 90-minute debate will be moderated by Gustavo Fischman professor at Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College.

The dialogue will explore three fundamental questions:

  • What are the primary uses and also misuses of global learning metrics?
  • What is the relationship between GLMs and models of development? Should we be paying more attention to environmental issues when planning educational reforms?
  • How can GLMs be reconceptualized to better understand the relationships between education, development and sustainability?

The discussion will be open and will include audience member questions.
